ARK: Survival Ascended takes the ARK: Survival Evolved formula — wash up naked on an island full of dinosaurs, survive, tame creatures, build an ever more imposing base — and runs it on Unreal Engine 5. The result is visually spectacular, but more importantly, it’s by far the game I’ve sunk the most hours into over the past few years: over a thousand, and I’m still not tired of it.

Taming is half the game

The heart of the experience is your relationship with the creatures: knock out a dinosaur, feed it patiently until it’s tamed, then train it for combat, resource hauling, or riding. Each species has its own strengths — a Rex for raw power, an Argentavis for aerial transport, an Ankylosaurus for efficient mining — and building a complementary stable quickly becomes a goal in itself, almost as engaging as survival itself.

A base that’s never really finished

Building and defending your base takes up a good chunk of playtime, between optimizing resource farms, setting up defenses against raids, and constant expansion. With several different maps to explore, each with its own biome and creatures, the game offers constant renewal, which probably explains why the hours pile up so fast without you noticing.
